WHAT IS AFFILIATE MARKETING?
Affiliate marketing is a way to make money online by recommending products or services that are made and sold by other companies or people. You do not need to create your own product. You do not need to have your own shop. You do not need to keep products at home, pack boxes or send orders to customers. Your job is mainly to introduce people to products or services that they may be interested in.
Let’s make it very simple. Imagine that a company sells an online course for €100. The company wants more people to know about this course and buy it. Instead of only using its own advertising, the company can work with other people who can recommend the course. These people are called affiliates. As an affiliate, you can talk about the course, create videos about the topic, explain what the course is about or show people where they can learn more. The company gives you a special link that belongs to you. This is called an affiliate link.
Your affiliate link is important because it allows the company to see that a customer came through you. Imagine that you share your link in your TikTok bio. Someone watches one of your videos and becomes interested in the product. They click your link and visit the company’s website. They decide to buy the product. Because the customer used your affiliate link, the company can see that you helped bring that customer to them. If the affiliate program offers a commission for that purchase, you can receive a percentage or a fixed amount from the sale.
For example, imagine that a product costs €100 and the affiliate program offers a 30% commission. If someone buys the product through your affiliate link and the purchase qualifies for a commission, you could receive €30. The company keeps the rest according to its own pricing and commission rules. This is only an example. Every affiliate program is different, and commissions can be higher, lower, a percentage of the sale, or sometimes a fixed amount. Some programs also have specific rules about when and how commissions are paid.
The important thing to understand is that you are not getting paid simply because you posted a video. You are also not automatically paid because someone clicked your link. Usually, you earn a commission when a person completes the action required by the affiliate program, such as making a purchase. The exact rules depend on the company and the affiliate program.
So, in the simplest way possible, affiliate marketing works like this: a company has a product, you recommend the product, you receive a special link, someone uses your link, and if they complete a qualifying purchase or action, you may receive a commission.
Think about it like recommending a good restaurant to a friend. Imagine your friend asks you, “Do you know a good restaurant?” You tell them about a restaurant you like and give them the address. Your friend goes there because of your recommendation. In normal life, you usually don’t receive money for recommending the restaurant. In affiliate marketing, however, a company can create a system where people who bring new customers to the company can receive a commission. Your affiliate link is what helps the company know that the customer came through you.
This is why affiliate marketing is often described as a connection between three main people or groups. First, there is the company or creator that owns the product. Second, there is the affiliate who promotes or recommends the product. Third, there is the customer who may decide to buy the product. The company provides the product, the affiliate helps bring attention to the product, and the customer decides whether the product is right for them.
You might be wondering why a company would want to pay someone else a commission instead of keeping all of the money itself. The answer is simple: companies want more customers. Advertising and marketing can be expensive, and companies use many different ways to reach new people. Affiliate marketing gives companies another way to reach potential customers. Instead of paying only for traditional advertising, they can work with affiliates and give them a commission when they successfully bring a customer through the affiliate system.
For the affiliate, this can be useful because they don’t have to create the product themselves. Imagine how much work it would take to create an online course, build a website, answer customer questions, process payments and update the course. As an affiliate, you can focus mainly on learning about the product, creating content and connecting the product with people who may actually be interested in it.
However, affiliate marketing does not mean that you can simply post a random link and become rich. This is one of the biggest things you need to understand before starting. Affiliate marketing is a real marketing method, but it still requires work. You need to learn how to create content, understand your audience, choose products carefully, communicate clearly and improve your strategy over time.
You also do not need thousands or millions of followers to start. Having a large audience can be helpful, but the number of followers is not the only thing that matters. Imagine that you have 100,000 followers, but none of them are interested in the product you are promoting. Your large audience may not help very much. Now imagine that you have a smaller audience, but those people are genuinely interested in the topic you talk about. Those people may be much more interested in the products you recommend.
This is why choosing the right topic is important. This topic is often called your niche. A niche is simply the main topic you create content about. Your niche could be beauty, fitness, fashion, technology, personal development, business, travel, cooking, education or many other things. You don’t have to choose a niche just because you think it can make money. It is also useful to choose something you understand, enjoy learning about or can create content about consistently.
For example, imagine you really enjoy skincare. You could create content about skincare tips, common skincare mistakes, product information and routines. If you later find an affiliate product that fits your audience and you genuinely believe it could be useful, you could recommend that product using your affiliate link. Someone who already follows you because they are interested in skincare may then be more interested in learning about the product.
This is much better than randomly promoting something that has nothing to do with your content. If someone follows you for fitness advice and suddenly you start posting random products about cars, they may not understand why you are recommending them. Your content, your audience and the products you promote should make sense together.
Another important part of affiliate marketing is trust. People are more likely to listen to someone they trust. This means you should not tell people that every product is amazing just because you want a commission. You should not make fake claims or pretend that you have used something when you have not. You should also never promise people that they will definitely make a certain amount of money.
For example, saying “This product will make you €1,000” is very different from saying “This is a product I found interesting, and here is what it offers.” The first statement makes a promise about someone’s financial result. That result cannot be guaranteed. A responsible affiliate marketer explains the product honestly and allows the customer to make their own decision.
The same applies when you talk about your own results. If you make your first commission, you can share your experience. If you make €20, you can say that you made €20. If you make €500, you can say that you made €500 if the result is real and you present it honestly. But your personal result does not mean that another person will automatically get the same result. Everyone starts from a different place and has a different audience, strategy, amount of time and experience.
You should also understand that there can be a difference between getting views and making sales. Imagine you post a video and it gets 100,000 views. That sounds exciting, but views alone do not automatically create income. People might watch your video and scroll away. Some people might visit your profile. Some might click your link. Some might look at the product. Only some people may eventually buy, and depending on the affiliate program, only qualifying purchases may generate a commission.
This means there is a journey between seeing your content and making a purchase. A person might first discover you through a TikTok or Instagram video. They might watch another video from you. They might visit your profile. They might read your bio. They might click your link. They might visit the product page. They might think about the product. And later, they might decide to buy it. Your job is not to force them to buy. Your job is to create useful content, explain things clearly and make it easy for interested people to learn more.
This is also why content is such an important part of affiliate marketing. Your content is how people discover you. You can create short videos, Instagram Reels, photos, carousels, slideshows, tutorials, reviews, educational posts or other types of content. You can show your face if you want to, but you don’t necessarily have to. Some people create content without showing their face by using videos, text, screen recordings, images, voiceovers or other formats.
The goal of your content should not always be “buy this.” If every video is just trying to sell something, people may stop paying attention. Instead, you can teach something, answer a question, explain a problem, share an experience, show a useful tip or make someone curious about a topic. Once people find your content useful, they have a reason to keep following you.
For example, if your niche is online business, you could make a video explaining what affiliate marketing is. Another video could explain what an affiliate link is. Another could explain common beginner mistakes. Another could show how you personally started. Another could answer a question you often receive. Some of these videos may lead people to your affiliate link, while others may simply help you build trust and attract the right audience.
Affiliate marketing can therefore be understood as more than simply “sharing links.” It is a combination of marketing, content creation, communication and recommending products. The affiliate link is only one part of the whole process.
There are many different affiliate programs available online. Some companies have their own affiliate programs, while others use affiliate platforms that connect companies with affiliates. An affiliate platform can make it easier to find products, get your affiliate links and see information about your commissions. Later in this course, we will look at how these platforms work and I will show you the platform I personally started with, PayPro, as part of my own journey.
But before we get there, I want you to understand the bigger picture. PayPro is not affiliate marketing itself. PayPro is an example of a platform that can be used within an affiliate marketing journey. Affiliate marketing is the larger concept. There are many companies, platforms, products and programs that can be part of affiliate marketing.
You also don’t need to create a website to understand or start learning about affiliate marketing. Depending on the affiliate program, you may be able to use social media and other online platforms to share your content and direct interested people to your affiliate link. However, every affiliate program has its own rules, so you should always read the terms and follow the rules of the platform you are using.
Another thing you should understand from the beginning is that affiliate marketing is not a “get rich quick” button. You may see people online showing big numbers and saying that they made a lot of money quickly. Some results may be real, but you should never assume that you will automatically get the same result. Online income can take time to build. You may post many videos before you get your first commission. You may try something that does not work. You may get views without sales. You may need to change your content, your niche, your product or your strategy.
That is completely different from saying that affiliate marketing does not work. It simply means that you have to learn what works for your specific situation. You test something, look at the result, learn from it and try again. This is how you improve.
Think of affiliate marketing like learning to drive. When you first sit in a car, you don’t automatically know how everything works. You have to learn what the pedals do, how to steer, how to look at the road and how to react to different situations. Affiliate marketing is similar. At the beginning, there may be many things you don’t understand. That is okay. You learn one thing at a time and slowly become more comfortable.
By the end of this part of the course, I want you to understand one simple idea: you do not need to own the product to promote it as an affiliate. You can learn about a product, create useful content around it, receive your own affiliate link, share that link with interested people and potentially receive a commission when someone completes a qualifying purchase through your link.
That is the basic idea behind affiliate marketing.
And this is only the beginning.
In the next lessons, we are going to go deeper into how affiliate marketing works, how commissions work, what affiliate links are, how to find products, how to choose a good product, where you can promote products, how content fits into the process and how you can start building your own affiliate marketing journey step by step.
You don’t need to understand everything today.
Just understand the basics first. Then we build from there.
MY OWN EXPERIENCE
I also started my own journey with affiliate marketing. At the beginning, I was learning the basics just like you are now. I learned how affiliate links worked, how to share products and how to create content around the products I was promoting.
As I continued learning and promoting, I got further than simply sharing an affiliate link. At one point, I received my own discount code that I could share with customers. This meant that people who were interested in the product could use my personal code when making a purchase.
For me, this was a really exciting moment because it showed me that affiliate marketing can involve more than simply posting a link. I was building a connection between the product and the people who were interested in it.
This is one of the reasons I wanted to create this course. I want to show you what I learned along the way, including the things I wish I had known when I was just starting.
My journey is my own experience, and your results may be different. The goal of this course is not to promise you a specific income, but to teach you how affiliate marketing works and give you the knowledge and tools to start your own journey.
